Case Closed: How to Write a Thrilling Ending – Master Class with Sara Paretsky Study with a master writer for an evening of close reading and in-depth discussion on crafting beginnings, middles and ends. Amos Oz said, “I don’t know if creative writing can be taught. I know how to erase, and that is what I teach my students.” There are three difficult parts to a piece of fiction; namely, the beginning, the middle and the end, with the beginning and the ending presenting the biggest challenges. These three pieces work in different ways in each book, but getting them right is a skill every writer must learn. Students will be sent a handout a month before the class, which will consist of two short stories, including Megan Abbott’s “Girlie Show.” Abbot’s story will be complete, but the second story will be missing its ending. The first half of the class will be spent discussing what decisions the writer may have made in selecting where to begin and end the story. The second half of the class will be for students to construct an ending to the second story. Not everyone will be able to read theirs aloud, but some students will have an opportunity to share and then the class as a whole can discuss the merits and pitfalls in relation to the rest of the story. This will help students unpack the components with endings, whether or not they are obvious or hidden. Students are expected to have read the materials before the class begins. Buy Tickets
